The Mac clipboard manager report 2026

What Mac users actually search for when they lose something they copied, what the 14 apps in this category charge, and where the built-in macOS clipboard stops. Original data, free to reuse.

Method in one line. Google Ads Keyword Planner (generateKeywordIdeas), English, United States + United Kingdom + Canada + Australia + India combined, 12-month average monthly searches. 545 keywords collected on 4 September 2026, then deduplicated into 62 Mac-specific demand groups. Prices were read from each vendor’s own pricing page on the same day. Download the raw data: JSON or CSV.

What the data shows

Mac-specific demand in this category runs to about 26,890 searches a month across 62 distinct demand groups. Almost none of it uses the word the industry uses. Phrasings built on clipboard history draw 14,570 searches a month across 11 demand groups. The group containing clipboard manager draws 1,900. People are not shopping for a category of software. They have lost something they copied and they are asking where it went.

That gap is the single most useful finding here. Every app in this report, including ours, calls itself a clipboard manager and writes its marketing around that phrase, while nearly eight times as many people type a question about clipboard history instead. The category markets itself in a vocabulary its own buyers do not use.

The second finding is that nobody is bidding for the traffic. Google rates 59 of the 62 demand groups low advertiser competition, and low-competition terms account for 99% of the demand by volume. For a category with fourteen commercial products in it that is unusual, and it means this category is won on organic search and word of mouth rather than on paid acquisition.

Where the demand is

Mac-specific demand groups with 200 or more searches a month, largest first. A group is one Google demand figure; the variant count is how many phrasings Google folded into it.

Rolled up, the demand splits across the category like this. “How-to” means a question about the Mac itself rather than about software, which is the traffic the macOS Tahoe change is now competing for.

Of the 14 apps, 7 are a one-time purchase, 3 are subscriptions and 4 are free or freemium. One-time prices run from $7.99 to $39, with two of them charging again for major updates. The recurring prices top out at $60 per user per year for TextExpander, a text expander rather than a clipboard manager, which makes the most expensive product in this category the one that does the least with your clipboard.

Nobody covers all three jobs

The category divides into three jobs that look adjacent but are sold as separate products: keeping a clipboard history, reading text off the screen, and expanding typed abbreviations. Of the 14 third-party apps surveyed, 4 do screenshot OCR and 6 do text expansion. 1 combine all three with clipboard history: Raycast. That is why a common Mac menu bar holds two or three of these at once, at two or three separate prices.

What macOS Tahoe changed

macOS 26 Tahoe added a clipboard history to Spotlight, reachable with ⌘Space then ⌘4, with a retention window of 30 minutes, 8 hours or 7 days. It is the first time the Mac has shipped a clipboard history at all, and it solves the most common complaint: copying two things in a row and losing the first.

It does not do the rest. Items age out at 7 days at most, there is no way to keep one item longer than the others, nothing can be pinned, tagged or organised, and it does not exist on macOS 13, 14 or 15. The8,630 searches a month in the how-to cluster are the traffic Apple now answers directly. The rest of the category still has to be bought.

Method, and what this data is not

  • Source. Google Ads Keyword Planner (generateKeywordIdeas), English, United States + United Kingdom + Canada + Australia + India combined, 12-month average monthly searches.
  • Deduplication. Google reports one shared figure for every close variant it groups, so summing raw keywords overstates demand badly. Keywords sharing an identical volume inside a cluster were collapsed into one group. This can merge two genuinely distinct keywords that land on the same bucketed figure, so the totals here understate rather than inflate.
  • Rounding. Keyword Planner returns bucketed figures, not exact counts. Treat every number as an order of magnitude, not a measurement.
  • Geography and language. English only, five countries. Demand outside them is not counted.
  • Prices. Read from vendor pricing pages on 4 September 2026, at list price, excluding tax, bundles such as Setapp, and promotional discounts.
  • No rankings. This report does not rank the apps or name a winner. It reports demand, prices and feature coverage, all of which you can check against the linked sources.

SnipVault is deliberately left out of the pricing table above, which covers third-party apps only, so the table can be read without discounting it. Our own pricing is on the pricing page, and the per-app feature comparisons are in the comparison section. Every figure in this report comes from a source you can open yourself: the search data is downloadable in full, and every price links to the vendor’s page.

Frequently asked questions

How many people search for a Mac clipboard manager each month?+

About 26,890 searches a month across 62 distinct Mac-specific demand groups, measured on 4 September 2026 from Google Ads Keyword Planner for English searches in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and India combined. The largest single group is "clipboard history mac" at 5,400 searches a month.

What do Mac users actually search for, a clipboard manager or clipboard history?+

History, by a wide margin. Phrasings built on "clipboard history" account for 14,570 searches a month across 11 demand groups, while the group containing "clipboard manager" accounts for 1,900. Most people do not know the software category exists; they are asking where the thing they copied went.

How much does a Mac clipboard manager cost in 2026?+

Across the 14 apps in this report, prices range from free and open source to $60 per user per year. 7 are one-time purchases, 3 are subscriptions and 4 are free or freemium. One-time prices run from $7.99 to $39, and two of those charge again for major updates.

Which Mac apps combine clipboard history, screenshot OCR and text expansion?+

Of the 14 apps surveyed, 1 combine all three: Raycast. Most tools do one of the three well, which is why many people run two or three of them side by side.

Did macOS Tahoe kill the clipboard manager category?+

No, but it changed the entry point. macOS 26 Tahoe added a clipboard history to Spotlight that keeps items for 30 minutes, 8 hours or 7 days and then discards them. It covers the common case of losing the previous copy. It does not keep an item beyond 7 days, search a month of history, pin or organise anything, or run on macOS 13, 14 or 15.

Can I reuse the data in this report?+

Yes. The search-demand dataset is published as JSON and CSV under CC BY 4.0. Quote it, chart it or republish it, with attribution to SnipVault and a link to this page.
